The Five Data Sets Every Specialty Pharmaceutical Needs Today

The right data approach is critical to understanding the challenges being experienced by prescribers and patients, tracking the flow of product through the distribution channel, and measuring product sales and inventory levels.

When well designed, this data establishes a single source of truth that empowers the organization to assess program health and make essential adjustments, aiding in customer satisfaction and product adoption.

Knowing how to build a data ecosystem that works best for your product isn’t always abundantly clear. That’s where a data architect who understands the industry, the stakeholders, and what “good” looks like can have a meaningful impact.

In today’s marketplace, there are five key data sets that we advise clients to consider when defining their product data ecosystem:

1. Specialty Pharmacy (SP)

  • Status – tracks the status of patients as they move through their journey. Milestones tracked include Benefit Investigation (BI), Prior Authorizations (PA), denials, cancellations, approvals, discontinuations, etc.

  • Dispense – provides visibility on all dispenses to patients

  • Inventory – product inventory levels at all pharmacies

2. Patient Services HUB

Provides detailed patient journey statuses as they move through programs such as Reimbursement (BI/BV, PA), PAP, Bridge, Nursing, etc. This data is used by field reimbursement managers to assist HCP offices in navigating reimbursement challenges.

3. Specialty Distributor (SD)

Tracks sales of products to HCPs and institutions. This is primarily done for products available via Buy & Bill. Data reported include product sales and ship to account name and address as well as inventory levels.

4. Copay Activity

Data related to patient enrollment into copay assistance programs as well as all copay claims activity at a patient level.

5. 3PL

Report on sales into the distribution channel to SPs, SDs, and Wholesalers. This is an important data set to accurately track sell in vs sell out as it relates to inventory reconciliation for SPs, or SDs reporting data.

Beginning with those five data sets and figuring out how to aggregate the information into actionable insights is a vital step in launch planning. If your team could use help with your data architecture design or implementation, Archbow can help. Contact us today to get started.
